Flexible systems based on system on modules

With system on modules, the most important components, such as CPU, chipset, RAM, etc., are found on a compact PCB. This is plugged into a carrier board by means of a plug connector. As the most expensive part of a customer-specific development is "stored" on the standard module, a customer-specific carrier board can be developed relatively quickly and easily. In this way we are able to supply our customers with an optional CPU unit adapted to suit their requirements. In addition, a system that is based on system on modules is very scaleable. For example, if more processor speed is necessary, the SoM (system on module) can quite simply be replaced.

Available standards in the case of system on modules

  • Comexpress: This standard is available from very low to high performance. It offers all the latest connections, such as PCIe, for instance. However, at 125 x 95 mm it is large and the most cost-intensive solution.
  • ETX: If a more cost-effective alternative is required, ETX is an interesting technology. The modules are smaller (114 x 95 mm). ISA bus is supported, but not PCIe.
  • XTX: XTX is a further development of ETX. The ISA bus is no longer available. This bus has been dispensed with in order to be able to support PCIe and other newer technologies.
  • NanoComexpress: As a result of the size, Comexpress cannot be used with every application. Consequently, a smaller, slimmed-down version of the Comexpress standard has been developed. Currently, these modules are available exclusively with ATOM CPUs. With dimensions of 84 x 55 mm, these modules are very small and have been developed above all for mobile applications.
  • Qseven: Qseven is a direct competitor for NanoComexpress. It offers similar specifications, but is a completely new standard (NanoComexpress is based on Comexpress and is therefore also compatible). As a result of the connecting plug, for instance, Qseven is the most cost-effective version of a system on module.

Our product highlights

  • COM-QM57/HM55: COM Express module based on the QM57/HM55 chipset. Depending on the particular model, a Core i-7 processor between 1.06 and 2.53 GHz is soldered on. The module uses DDR III RAM up to 8 GB,
  • AQ7-LN: This Qseven module is very compact, cost-effective and energy-saving. The Intel ATOM processor can be used up to 1.66 GHz without a fan. 1 GB DDR II RAM is soldered onto the module. As an option, this SoM can also be equipped with 4 GB flash memory

Our design-in services

We can help you with the feasibility study and evaluation of compatible boards, as well as additional components to suit your requirements. As far as we are concerned, the optimal technical problem solution to your enquiry that also satisfies your requirements is the most important issue. In the case of system on modules, we are happy to take over the design of the carrier board on request. If you are developing the board yourself, you will receive design guides for all SoMs. Should a customer so require, we are happy to carry out a design review. As mainboards are, as a rule, embedded in your system, BIOS adaptations are often desirable. From your BIOS logo to modifications to standard settings or more complex adaptations, we have already implemented many customer wishes in various projects.
